1. Which are the important dimensions of a spring?

1. First determine the type of spring. A compression spring has an open spiral, an extension spring has a closed spiral and a torsion spring is the type that you normally find on a clothes peg.

2. Now measure the principal dimensions of your spring:

 

 For a metre spring, you need to measure :

• the diameter of the wire d
• the external diameter Do
• the free length Lo

compression metre	traction metre

 

For a compression spring you need to measure:

• the diameter of the wire d
• the external diameter Do
• the free length Lo

 

 For an extension spring you need to measure:

• the diameter of the wire d
• the external diameter Do
• the free length Lo
  this is measured to the inside of the loop

 

For a torsion spring you need to measure:

• the diameter of the wire d
• the external diameter Do
• the length of the free ends E
• you also need to specify the angle for the free ends (90°, 180°, 270° or 360°)
